What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and does it work?

Search Engine optimization is the process of making specific modifications to a website to influence Search Engine position in a positive way. The Internet was originally developed to allow communication between incompatible computer systems. Later, universities began using the Internet as a pipe-line for the exchange of scientific and academic information. This exchange was in the form of text content. The idea of exchanging graphics, photos, video or sound clips on the Internet is a recent development.

Search engines were developed as tools to locate content relative to the subject searched. Because the Internet's basic objective is to store and retrieve relevant text, Search Engines rank your website based on the quality of its text content. A website containing no text only graphics, Flash movies, video or sound is virtually invisible to a Search Engine.

For this reason, relevant text content is of paramount importance if you wish to rank high on a Search Engine. In addition, this content needs to be organized in a way that is easy for a Search Engine to find and index. The majority of websites that are currently on the web are lacking some or all of the components required to be ranked high by a Search Engine. Will optimizing my website make me number one?

This is because there may only be a handful of web savvy Realtors in Umatilla and many thousands of lawyers in Miami all vying for the number one position.
