Improving Graphic Images

Many small business websites are constructed by people who are not trained to properly create web graphics.  The following are examples of common graphic mistakes.

The banner below has a number of problems.  There is a white halo, called a fringe, surrounding the logo, the background is flat and uninteresting and the file size to too large causing it to load very slowly.

This is the same graphic after enhancement.   The result is a clean crisp graphic that looks much better and loads in about 1/5 of the time.

Image Display Problems

Messy graphics can make your website look like the work of an amateur.

There are two common image formats on the web; GIF and JPEG.   In general, GIFs are used for logos, line graphics and broad areas of common color.  JPEGS are used for photographic images or gradient patterns.    Here are the results of incorrect formatting.

Bad type graphic         Correct type graphic
JPEG                           GIF

The "A" on the left is blurry and has a dirty halo.  The A on the right is clear and sharp because the image is "type" and GIF is the best format for simple type graphics.

Here are two photographic images:

Bad flower graphic           Correct flower graphic
GIF                                                         JPEG

The flower on the left is blurry and shows little detail because the designer incorrectly used the GIF format for a photograph.  The JPEG image on the right looks much better and has a much smaller overall file size because it is correctly displayed as a JPEG photographic image.

Both of these images are on a black background.  The "A"  on the left is rough and has a white fringe.  The "A" on the right is clear and sharp.

The graphic on the left was created using the default white Photoshop matte instead of matching the matte to the background color.

As you can see, small changes can make a significant difference in the appearance and effectiveness of your website.  If you would like to speak with us about redesigning or enhancing your company website, please contact:
